Easter Moments, Motherhood, and the Magic of Spring: A Family Reflection

This Easter, we celebrated more than a holiday — we embraced a moment of calm, connection, and family joy. The sunlit morning began with tradition, continued with laughter, and ended with a sense of peace that only spring can bring.

🌷 Why Easter Is So Special to Our Family

As a Ukrainian-American mom raising two sons in Los Angeles, I’ve always tried to blend traditions from my roots with the vibrant life we live here. Easter is one of those beautiful bridges — full of rituals, colors, and quiet reflection.

This year, we started the day with a visit to church, carrying a basket of beautifully decorated eggs and sweet bread that I baked myself. There’s something sacred in this rhythm, in teaching my children about love, kindness, and cultural roots. It’s a tradition I grew up with — filling the home with the smell of vanilla and warm dough, kneading by hand, and decorating each loaf with love.

And of course, we couldn’t forget Floppa, our Maine Coon queen and new mama. Her kittens were born just days ago, making this Easter extra special. New life everywhere — what a beautiful sign of spring’s promise!

5 Fun Easter Facts You Might Not Know:

  1. In Ukraine, the Easter basket is a huge deal. It’s filled with symbolic foods: eggs (life), bread (Jesus), salt (purity), and butter (God’s gifts).
  2. The word "Easter" may come from "Eostre", a goddess of spring and renewal in ancient pagan mythology.
  3. Cats were once considered magical spring protectors in Slavic folklore — no wonder Floppa guards her kittens like a lioness!
  4. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet tall and weighed more than 8,000 pounds!
  5. In some cultures, you don’t just decorate eggs — you “bless” them during Easter Mass and keep one on your shelf all year for luck.
