How We Feed Our Maine Coon Kittens: Our Schedule and Tips

Bringing Maine Coon kittens into your home is an adventure full of fluff, fun, and a lot of learning!
One of the first (and most important) questions we asked ourselves was — how often and what exactly should we feed our Maine Coon babies?

Today, I’m sharing our personal feeding schedule for our Maine Coon kittens.
This is simply how we do it based on our experience and advice we've received
always consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations for your kitten’s specific needs.

Our Maine Coon Kitten Feeding Schedule

0-4 Weeks
At this age, kittens are fully dependent on their mother’s milk.
We step in only if necessary with kitten formula, using a bottle every 2–3 hours around the clock.

4-8 Weeks
We start introducing soft, wet kitten food while they still nurse.
We offer small portions 4–5 times a day, encouraging curiosity without forcing.

8-12 Weeks
By now, our kittens transition mainly to high-quality wet kitten food and a little dry food for crunchy texture exploration.
We feed them 4 times a daymorning, lunch, early evening, and before bedtime.
Fresh water is available at all times!

3-6 Months
Our kittens enjoy 3 meals a day, still primarily wet food with a little kitten kibble sprinkled in.
Maine Coons are slow growers, so extra attention to balanced nutrition is key.

6-12 Months
As they grow, we gradually shift to 2–3 feedings a day, incorporating more dry food (formulated for large breed kittens) and ensuring they still get enough moisture through wet food or extra water.

Few Personal Tips We've Learned Along the Way:

  • Consistency is everything. Same times, same place — kittens love routine!
  • Watch their weight but don’t restrict too much. Maine Coons grow steadily and slowly until 3–5 years old!
  • Quality over quantity. We invest in the best kitten-specific food we can find.
  • Hydration matters. Wet food is a great way to help them stay hydrated.

Our Friendly Reminder

Every kitten is different!
What works for us might not work for everyone.
Your Maine Coon may need different nutrition based on their size, health, or energy levels.
Please consult your veterinarian to create the perfect plan for your kitten’s healthy start in life!
