Raising a Maine Coon Kitten: 20 Days Old and Full of Wonder
Share
There’s something magical about watching a Maine Coon kitten grow.
At just 20 days old, their world is still small — but their charm is already huge.
This tiny fluffball is still in her early kittenhood phase. Her eyes have just opened, her ears are unfolding, and every day she surprises me with new movements: a curious paw stretch, a gentle squeak, a tiny yawn.
But behind all this cuteness is an important responsibility — understanding how to care for a Maine Coon kitten at every stage, especially when it comes to feeding and development.
When Do Maine Coon Kittens Start Eating?
For the first 3–4 weeks of life, kittens rely entirely on their mother’s milk. It provides essential antibodies, hydration, and nutrition for healthy growth.
If the mother cat is present (like in our case), she does all the feeding. But if you’re raising an orphaned kitten or supplementing feedings, you’ll need to:
- Use kitten-specific formula (like KMR or PetAg)
- Bottle-feed every 2–3 hours around the clock
- Keep kittens warm and clean, as they can’t regulate body temperature or go potty on their own
When to Introduce Solid Food?
Around 4 weeks old, Maine Coon kittens may begin to show interest in their mom’s food or try licking soft substances.
That’s your cue to begin weaning:
✅ Weaning Starter Foods (4–8 weeks):
These are soft, easy to digest, and perfect for transitioning from milk:
-
Royal Canin Mother & Babycat Wet Food
→ Soft mousse texture, ideal for 1–4 months
→ Supports digestion and immunity -
Wellness CORE Kitten Wet Food (Turkey & Chicken Liver)
→ High protein, DHA for brain development
→ Grain-free and rich in healthy fats -
Blue Buffalo Baby Blue Kitten Pâté
→ Natural ingredients, gentle for tiny tummies
→ Contains taurine, DHA, and no by-products
Soften food with kitten formula or warm water for easier lapping. Offer small portions several times a day.
Best Dry Foods for Maine Coon Kittens (8+ weeks)
As your kitten grows, you can gradually introduce dry food alongside wet food:
-
Royal Canin Maine Coon Kitten Dry Food
→ Breed-specific formula for bone and joint support
→ Kibble shape designed for large jaws -
Hill’s Science Diet Kitten Dry Food
→ Balanced formula with vitamins C + E
→ Great for kittens with sensitive digestion -
Orijen Cat & Kitten Dry Food
→ 85% protein-rich animal ingredients
→ Grain-free, supports lean muscle and energy

Mix dry and wet foods during this transition stage to keep digestion smooth and palatability high.
